<p>Once at the top only the branches containing the deep purple berries are removed. He then slides down the trunk of the tree protecting the Acai branches with its berries from touching the jungle floor. Then by hand they sweep down each pencil thin branch removing the berries allowing them to tumble into large woven bushel baskets. The hands of these harvesters become stained from the dark pigment of the Acai berry.</p>
<p>The large acai bushel baskets are then loaded onto canoes or boats and brought to pre-arranged collection spots on the river. It is here where the local Co-Op trucks wait to receive the many baskets from all of the &#8220;ribeneiros&#8221; or river dwellers who have collected their Acai berries. The truck drivers stack the woven baskets as high as they dare then throw a trap over their cargo and strap it in for the ride to the processing plant.</p>
<p>Once at the processing plant the acai berry baskets are off loaded from the truck by hand, are weighed and the contents of each are then emptied into large water baths. The Acai berries are then washed and cleaned. The Acai berries are then subjected a process similar to a large blender where the thin layer of skin and meat are removed from the very large seed or stone. The seeds are then discarded or used for re-distribution to the harvesters to promote new tree growth. The seeds have no nutritional significance or use. Often you can see large mounds of seeds as they pile up around the processing plants.</p>
